The Palo Alto-based company announced Wednesday it would offer free options trading. An option is a financial product that gives investors the right to buy or sell a security at a specified price in the future. Robinhood Financial LLC and Robinhood Crypto, LLC are wholly-owned subsidiaries of Robinhood Markets, Inc. Equities and options are offered to self-directed customers by Robinhood Financial. But Robinhood has almost as many accounts as some much larger online brokers, so there could be a significant amount of cash sitting idle. As it nears its fourth birthday, the firm has added a website, along with options trading, limited cryptocurrency trading and after-hours trades at no fee.
